Arael: This angel attacks after Commander Ikari has ordered that Unit 01 be kept in chryostasis, therefore prohibiting Shinji to fight in it. So Asuka in Unit 02 and Rei in Unit 00 are sent out to fight. Asuka refuses to backup Unit 00 and takes the point instead. The entire time though Arael is out of range for any of Nerv's weapons, so Asuka waits in the rain for angel to come into range. The angel then attacks with a beam of light that invades and contaminates Asuka's mind, forcing her to remember her horrible memories. Rei in Unit 00 then attempt to destroy the angel with a positron rifle, but the gun's blast is not enough to peirce the angel's A.T. Field. So Commander Ikari orders that Rei go to Terminal Dogma and get the Lance of Longinus. Rei does so and comes back to the surface, throws the lance and annihilates the target, thus freeing Unit 02 from the angel's mind-contamination beam.
