Armisael: This angel attacks and only Rei in Unit 00 are sent out to fight it at first. The angel demonstrates the ability to change forms and does so when it attacks Unit 00. Rei attempts to shoot it with her rifle, but it does nothing. The angel then begins to physically fuse with Unit 00 and invade Rei's mind as well. Asuka in Unit 02 is sent out to help, but Asuka's pride had been severely damaged by her recent losses, thus lowering her synch-ratio to level where she couldn't even get her Eva to move. So, Asuka is brought back to Nerv. Shinji is then sent out in Unit 01. Armisael then attacks Eva Unit 01 but the Eva dodges it's attack. Rei, not wanting Shinji to suffer her fate, self-destructs Evangelion Unit 00, destroying the angel, herself, the Eva and Tokyo-3.
