Sandalphon: Sandalphon is found in an egg-like chrysalis state in a volcano. Nerv goes on the offensive and attempts to capture the angel. Unfortunately the angel "hatches" almost immediately after capture and attacks Unit 02, which had lost its progressive knife on its descent. Shinji throws his knife down to Asuka, but it is of little help because the extreme temperature of the lava had distended the molecular structure of the Angel. Shinji reminds Asuka of a recent lesson on thermal expansion, and Asuka uses coolant to cause the angel to disintegrate.
