History:
Cicely Asher was born in a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio, and lived there most of her life. She was born two years after her older brother, Brandon, and the first ten years of her life were normal and happy. She was a normal, social girl with a lot of friends and getting good grades-but then, when she was ten, her life began to change.
Cicely found herself living in the shadow of her older brother; however, she's been under no pressure to live up to his example. Brandon started getting in trouble, his grades in school dropping drastically. Soon he was in trouble with the law for stealing & for his drug habits. His rebellion consumed most of the energy that Cicely's parents, Meg and Christopher Asher, had reserved for their children. Cicely found herself in the background while she listened to her parents and brother fight.
Cicely was always a bright, model student; she had even skipped the second grade. Now she was working even harder in school than she was before, mostly to win her parents' attention. They were relieved that she was a good girl, but her obedience was an excuse for them to devote more time to her delinquent older brother. When that didn't work, Cicely began to lose interest in school and her friends. Her parents worried about her, but when her brother got into an accident while driving drunk and nearly died, they had little time to worry about Cicely's less urgent problems.
While Brandon recovered, Cicely spent most of her time in her room, drawing and painting. She visited her brother in the hospital and as he went through rehab-though she was angry at her parents, she still felt sorry for Brandon and wanted to help him. She started to feel better and made connections with her friends again-and then, the summer before her senior year of high school, Brandon was released from rehab and her parents announced that they were moving to Vinton, to give him a fresh start on a new life.
Her roots pulled, Cicely felt like she was floating. She didn't expect to find friends in Vinton-by the senior year of high school, most friendships have already been established-but she found herself attracted to Awai Oboe, a boy that no one else seemed to like. Fascinated by him, she soon developed a crush that turned into unwavering devotion (obsession, almost). Instead of worrying about impressing her family, she worried about impressing him.
She doesn't expect him to return her love for him-she knows she's not good looking, and that he has other things to worry about-but is happy to serve him and works hard to please him (as a jewel hunter). Obsidian infused in her the power of mind-altering drugs when he realized how devoted she was to him; she would rather die than betray him.
Personality:
Cicely is stubborn and somewhat close-minded after she has made up her mind on something. Once she has decided on a cause, she will throw herself into it whole-heartedly, and the cause closest to her heart is serving Obsidian. She isn’t concerned with other people’s opinions of her, though if anyone insults Awai in her presence she will do her best to gain revenge. She hates having to compromise or-even worse-being proven wrong about something. However, if you agree with her views, she’s not that hard to get along with. She hates prejudice and politics, as well as people she considers “shallow”. However, she’s not openly mean; in fact, she’s pretty nice and polite to everyone, until they do something to get on her bad side. She’s also smart and is doing pretty well at school, wanting to get out of Vinton and go to college next year.
Physical Appearance:
Cicely is too plain and boyish for anyone to call her pretty. Her straight, light-brown hair is layered around her face, with a long, thin ponytail that falls past her waist. She has a rather small, undeveloped chest, and usually wears loose, baggy clothes that cause one to have to look twice to see that she is female. Her eyes are a muddy hazel color, and she never wears makeup. She has pale skin that sunburns easily.
