Magic in Mirei is, quite literally, a gift from the gods. The mages of Mirei acquire their magical power through a contract made with a specific deity. The terms of the contract vary greatly between deities, as do the amount and type of powers granted through such a contract. Very rarely will they share a follower--as a general rule, a mage can only receive magical powers from one deity.

Some gods or goddesses may be more easygoing in what they expect from a follower in exchange for magical powers, while others are very demanding. Most expect their mages to take a vow to follow a set of precepts; for example, the followers of Madin are granted healing magic in return for a promise to look after children who need help. Others demand prayer and glory, and some nastier gods may even demand blood sacrifice. There's a pretty wide range in this department.

While in most cases it is a human who seeks out the power of a god, in some cases a deity may choose a likely human to dump his or her powers on--whether the human wants them or not. Valode is the first to do it in such great numbers, but other humans have been "chosen" by the gods before to carry out a task the god wants done.
